8 reasons to host a traveller in your home

par Marie

We often read about why it is important to travel, why you should explore other countries and why it’s even better if you can stay with locals.

But have you ever wondered how travellers can find hosts so easily and why they’re warmly welcomed wherever they go? What motivates people to house travellers?

At the same time, what happens if you cannot travel at the moment, but wish you could? What can convince you to become a host and welcome travellers from around the world into your home?

  • Shake up your daily routine

Sometimes, our daily routine can get boring. We get up, go to work, come home, eat and go to sleep. Easy.
Welcoming a traveller to your home once in a while can give a little spontaneity to your daily habits.
Travellers are often very curious and don’t know much about local lives: they’re looking to learn more about you, how you live. They will be happy to participate in many activities and you’ll have many topics to discuss!

  • Learn a language

Welcoming someone to your home is the best occasion to know more about his/her life and to expand on what you already know. You chose French in high school but don’t remember much of it? Well, host a French traveller for a few days from time to time and you’ll see how quickly you improve your skills.

It’s also a great occasion for your kids to meet foreign people and to enjoy a new language. You don’t have to send them to a camp abroad: the immersion comes to them!

  • Travel from the comfort of your home

It is not always easy to travel. We can lack time or money … Hosting someone at home is an alternative to travel, as a different culture comes to you. You can travel from the comfort of your own house. Travellers carry with them their language, their traditions, their cooking rituals, and their songs… If you welcome them they will be honoured to share everything with you. Listen to them, close your eyes and away you go!

  • Have a new family member

Welcoming a stranger into your home can easily turn into welcoming a new friend into your life. It’s a deep human experience and he/she can quickly become a new family member.

It's the chance to meet people you wouldn’t have had the occasion to meet otherwise. You just have to be curious and open your door.

  • Learn a new recipe

As previously mentioned, a traveller conveys his culture while travelling around the world.

If you take a look at the many travellers’ profiles on TalkTalkBnb, you can see that many of them are happy to cook for their host. What better occasion to learn a new recipe and taste new dishes? Besides, it’s even better to learn a language around the table or while cooking!

  • Become even more open-minded

Travelling makes you open minded. But hosting someone you don’t know does too. You will have so many topics to talk about with your guests, so many things to learn from them that each meeting will change you. You get to know people and cultures that you’d never had the occasion to see before, and that is essential.

  • Find a place to stay at for your next travel

Travellers will always be grateful for what you did with them during their trip. Often, they will invite you to their home too. Each new friend you make from around the world is a new place to visit and to stay for free when your turn to travel comes! It’s fantastic to discover someone’s life after they discover yours.

  • Make great memories

Of course, all of the above reasons will give you the chance to forge great memories to share and to cherish.

Maybe you haven’t moved a mile, but still, you have travelled a lot! You have met new friends, visited new countries, learned a new language…without leaving your house or spending a dime! It’s a wonderful experience to live for families, students, retired people...

What about you, are you ready to become a host?
