Carnival around the world

Carnival is a holiday celebrated around the world, most notably in Europe and America. Disguised party goers march in the streets in elaborate parades, celebrating the days leading up to Lent. Want to discover new and exciting Carnival traditions? We’ve made you a list of the top 5 countries with the best Carnival celebrations in the world.

1 – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The most famous Carnival in the world is held in Brazil. Starting on the Friday before Ash Wednesday, this event includes many large parades of costumes, music and dance along the city avenues, organized by the world’s best dance schools. They then perform in the Sambadrome as part of an official competition. For a week of intense festivities day and night, head to Brazil.
This year, Carnival starts February 28th.

2 – Venice, Italy

Carnevale in Venice is more elegant, with the tradition of Baroque costumes and masks. It’s one of the most beautiful atmospheres in the world. The festivities take place for about two weeks, starting with the famous “Flight of the Angel” over the Piazza San Marco. This year, Carnevale begins February 11th.

3 – Nice, France

Carnaval in Nice is famous for it’s unique parade of flowers, where over 100,000 flowers are thrown on passersby from floats. The festivities last about two weeks, with 11 parades of about 1,000 musicians and dancers from around the world. This year, Carnaval in Nice begins February 11th.

4 – Notting Hill, England

What’s interesting about Carnival here? For one, it takes place in August! Carnival in Notting Hill (a neighborhood of London) is often compared to Rio de Janeiro since it’s a multicultural festival in warm weather. It’s a fantastic atmosphere of brightly colored costumes, delicious food (with typical Caribbean dishes like jerk chicken, curry and fried plantains) and diverse music and dance. This year, Carnival is August 27th and 28th.

5 – New Orleans, United States

Carnival in the “Big Easy” is considered the second largest in the world. Attracting around 750,000 people each year, participants collect bead necklaces thrown from parades- often behaving wildly in an attempt to get as many as possible. If you’re up for a crazy good time, head on down to New Orleans!
This year, Carnival is from January 6th to February 28th.
